A lot of plumbers quote by the hour. It sounds straightforward, but in practice it rarely is. Hourly rates don’t account for the full cost of delivering a quality service — things like insurance, vehicle running costs, licensing, and our admin, who keep everything running smoothly.
At Hello Plumbing, we use a margin-based pricing system. Before any work begins, we assess the job, present you with a fixed price, and don’t start until you’re comfortable and have approved the scope.
That approach only works if we price honestly. Below is exactly how a typical job is costed: what goes to labour and materials, what covers our overheads, and what a healthy business needs to keep showing up for you in the long term.
| Cost Category | Share | What it covers |
| Wages & Labour | 38% | Paying our licensed plumbers fairly |
| Insurance | 16% | Public liability, workers comp & vehicle cover |
| Vehicles & Fuel | 13% | Fleet maintenance, registration, fuel |
| Materials & Parts | 11% | Stock, fittings, consumables on the van |
| Tools & Equipment | 9% | Specialised plumbing, gas & drain equipment |
| Administration & Software | 6% | Scheduling, invoicing, bookkeeping, IT |
| Licensing & Compliance | 4% | NSW licences, training, certifications |
| Marketing | 3% | How customers find us in the first place |
Note: These figures represent the proportion of total business expenses — not your invoice total. A healthy net profit margin (the remainder) is what allows us to keep investing in our team, equipment, and training.
WHAT TO EXPECT
| General Plumbing $150 – $300 Most standard residential jobs |
|
| Blocked Drains $200 – $500 Depending on access & complexity |
|
| Emergency & After Hours $250 – $450 Callout + labour, after-hours rate |
|
These are guides, not fixed prices. Every job gets assessed on-site before we quote. Once you’ve approved the price, that’s what you pay, no adjustments mid-job unless the scope genuinely changes, and we’ll always talk to you before going further.
